Welcome

Not Your English Class is a website for all things literature and language. Whether you are an avid reader, a student, someone wanting to get back into literature, or an English language learner, this website is for you. Together, we’ll explore new books, dive into language, and uncover things you never knew you needed. All are welcome here, from experts to people beginning their English learning journeys!

Who Am I?

My name is Ashley. I am a lifelong reader and language learner. As a child, I fell in love with the magic of books, and reading became an integral part of my life. From rom coms to murder mysteries, I loved it all, and I wanted to devour one book after the next.

After growing up surrounded by books and writing, I eventually got my credential and Master’s degree in teaching secondary English Language Arts. Since then, I have taught all kinds of English classes–honors, regular, online, in-person–and worked with all kinds of students. I also run a site called Dreaming Upwards that aims to help college students transition in university, adult, and career life.

Through these experiences, I realized how much passion I had for sharing my own passion with others, but how I couldn’t do all of this within the confines of a classroom job. Literature and language mean different things to different people, and they aren’t always accessible. My job is to make it accessible for you!

Beyond teaching English to native speakers and sharing my love of reading with others, I am passionate about helping those who are starting on their English learning journeys. As a language learner and traveler myself, I know that it is not easy to learn a language! It takes time, effort, and the assistance of great teachers. That’s why I want to give you a one stop resource to make your journey easier. Here, you will find all kinds of resources to help you become fluent, made for language learners by a language learner.

Literature and language are two of my passions, and I want to share my experience and expertise with others. For me, language is more than a hobby or a job. It is a way to communicate with the world and share the human experience. My own experience has opened multiple doors and introduced me to so many amazing people, and I want to give that gift to others.
